Purchase Period, Applied Period

Pricing Rules can be configured with different conditions to control when a price adjustment should apply.

Two of the most important settings are the Purchase Period and Applied Period. If more than one Pricing Rule matches a booking, the Priority setting determines the order in which those rules are applied.

This article explains how these settings work and provides examples to help you configure your Pricing Rules correctly.

Purchase Period vs. Applied Period

When creating a Pricing Rule, you can define two different date ranges:

  • Purchase Period – when the customer makes the booking.
  • Applied Period – when the activity takes place.

These dates control different parts of the booking.

A simple way to remember

Purchase Period = When the customer buys
Applied Period = When the customer travels

Both conditions must be satisfied for the Pricing Rule to apply.

Purchase Period

The Purchase Period determines when a customer must make their booking for the Pricing Rule to apply.

Think of it as:

“When is this promotion available for purchase?”

For example, you want to run an Early Bird promotion from 1 June to 15 June.

Your Purchase Period would be:

From: 1 June
Until: 15 June

A customer who makes a booking on 5 June can qualify for the Pricing Rule, provided all the other conditions are also met.

A customer who makes a booking on 20 June will not qualify.

Applied Period

The Applied Period determines when the actual activity or experience must take place for the Pricing Rule to apply.

Think of it as:

“When must the customer take the experience?”

For example, you want to offer a discount on summer tours taking place from 1 July to 31 August.

Your Applied Period would be:

From: 1 July
Until: 31 August

Only activities taking place within this period can qualify for the rule.

How the Two Periods Work Together

The Purchase Period and Applied Period work together.

A booking must satisfy both date conditions for the Pricing Rule to apply.

Example: Early Bird Summer Promotion

You want to offer a 15% discount for customers who book early for summer tours.

Your Pricing Rule is configured as follows:

SettingConfiguration
Purchase Period1 June – 15 June
Applied Period1 July – 31 August
RuleDecrease by 15%

Scenario 1 – Rule Applies ✅

Booking date: 5 June
Activity date: 15 July

The booking date is within the Purchase Period, and the activity date is within the Applied Period.

Result: 15% discount is applied.

Scenario 2 – Rule Does Not Apply ❌

Booking date: 5 June
Activity date: 20 June

The booking date is within the Purchase Period, but the activity date is outside the Applied Period.

Result: No discount is applied.

Scenario 3 – Rule Does Not Apply ❌

Booking date: 20 June
Activity date: 15 July

The activity date is within the Applied Period, but the booking date is outside the Purchase Period.

Result: No discount is applied.

Important

The Purchase Period and Applied Period are independent conditions. Having a valid booking date alone is not enough—the activity date must also meet the rule’s conditions.

Additional Conditions

Purchase and Applied Periods are not the only conditions that can affect whether a Pricing Rule applies.

You can further restrict a rule using:

Weekdays

Select specific days of the week.

For example, you can create a rule that applies only on:

  • Saturday
  • Sunday

This is useful for weekend surcharges.

Time of Day

You can specify a time window during which the activity must start.

For example:

From: 10:00
Until: 18:00

Only activities starting within this time window qualify.

Minimum Days in Advance

You can require customers to book a certain number of days before the activity.

For example:

Minimum days in advance: 7

The Pricing Rule will only apply when the booking is made at least seven days before the activity.

This is particularly useful for Early Bird promotions.
